 Dog food aerials
Well, sort of. Our cats and dogs get through tonnes of the stuff so I end up with hundreds of tin cans. I often ponder on the feasibility of soldering them together to make a 50ft tall tubular vertical. I wonder whether anyone has tried it: I can foresee all sorts of mechanical difficulties.

 Re: Dog food aerials
Do it and let us know how it goes Dave. If you string some paracord through them to work like a messenger line that takes care of the issues of mechanicals and its just then a case of getting good RF flow from one can to the next. Bet it has one hell of a wide bandwidth.

 Re: Dog food aerials
I think the paracord idea is a good one. I did try soldering a few together once but got bored (they act like heatsinks, the soldering takes an age even with my trusty Weller heat gun).
I think I might try it: these things niggle dont they, until you give in

IMO this antenna will turn out a dog's dinner.

If it doesn't work as an antenna, put some wings on and say it is a scale model of the vomit comet.

 Re: Dog food aerials
I've heard of various tin cans being used for microwaves, with suitably placed driven element at focal point, but a tower of them, simply soldered together, for VHF or HF? I give it until the first strong wind before the fractures bring it down a bit at a time. If you are hell bent on the project, just for the sake of it, at least braze them together, or mig weld, and even then I doubt it will last too long. The best I have seen them used for, three at a time stacked, bottoms removed as well as tops, soldered together, coat of hammerite paint, and they then make half decent leek growing tubes. Antennas?, wouldn't try it for even the hell of it.

 Re: Dog food aerials
I remembered reading about something similar some time ago, but made from beer cans. I've found this - http://www.k8es.org/archives/2012_Septe ... tenna.htmlIt might be worth a Butchers. I don't think that was the article I read before, I think it was a design for a 2m or maybe a 6m J Pole. Anyway, good luck. I hope you make an antenna that's a winner, but I bet you won't Winalot.

 Re: Dog food aerials
I had the same idea a number of years ago ...well nearly ,I got my first proper tig when I was maybe 20 ,thinking it would be good to weld loads of cans together (coke and beer)....not so lol was mega hard to weld way too thin !

 Re: Dog food aerials
Must have mis-read the title, thought it said "Dog shit aerials". Just get an old Microwave Oven, fill each can with dog shite and bundle as many cans of shite into the Microwave as possible and shove a propane canister in for good luck, switch it on and run like ferk!

 Re: Dog food aerials
I remember years ago when we first got beer in cans and the cans were made of tin that several people tried soldering them together to make a vertical antenna with some success depending on the radials. But now they are made of aluminium I guess it's a tougher job to solder them. Happy New Year to all. 73 de Ken G3RFH
