Sma;ll Garden - Wire Traps question
Hi All,
Thank you for reading this. I, like many am a small garden person who also likes to over engineer things. I have been using a 40m OCFD with good effect, yet even that is a real stretch in my garden. I do have a half size G5RV that i imported years ago that i use to make use of, it also worked well, it is a USA import with a 2kw rating. Now part of my line of questions is more around 80m in this case. I want a multi band antenna that will do more than i am doing on 80m currently (wing and pray as antenna are 40m). My current thought is back to the half size G5RV and add traps, now the only traps I can find are 400w rating, so this of course will lower the rating of the antenna. Looking forward if we get the increase in output, it would be nice for some traps more substantial (chances i will never use that amount of output) I am open to thoughts please and advice? Keep in mind the half size G5RV is 52ft, if i added traps, i could just dog leg squeeze that in I think based on my maths.

Re: Sma;ll Garden - Wire Traps question
You will need to fit loading coils and not traps. There is a big difference between the two. Loading coils will add inductance therefore adding more length and traps would be used like say you have an 80m dipole then you would add traps at certain points on each element to get other bands below 80m.

Re: Sma;ll Garden - Wire Traps question
Have you considered an INV L Antenna, perhaps with a remote Tuner / Coupler to give multi band operation?

Re: Sma;ll Garden - Wire Traps question
I can vouch for Len GM0ONX inverted L, mines 80-10mtrs and does work extremely well for its size.

I have considered an Endfed and still am, yet would rather use what i have than invest in more, yet very open to it.

Hi have you tried a 9.1 unun and 53 feet of wire that is what i use top band to 6m mine is set up the 9.1 unun is around 3ft off the ground with a 17ft counterpoise off the ground the 53ft wire is 22ft up to a cheap telescopic flag pole of amazon your internal atu will tune the bands that need it
